More Info

Our Karimikui AA is grown in Kirinyaga County, which lies at the very heart of the country, approximately 112 km North East of the capital city Nairobi. The coffee grows on the fertile volcanic slopes of eastern Mount Kenya, where it grows at altitudes of 1,700 to 1,900 metres above sea level and receives ample rainfall for coffee cultivation. Much like Nyeriy, the neighbouring country, Kirinyaga is well-known for its exceptional coffee.

Kenya produces an average of 750,000 bags of coffee per year and is heavily dependant on smallholder producers, since the average farm size in Kenya is 1-2 hectares, many of who are growing as few as 150 coffee trees. They bring the coffee cherries to centrally located mills, where their coffees are weighed, sorted, and combined to create lots large enough to process and export.

Karimikui Coffee Factory was established in the late 1950s and is part of the Rung’eto FCS Cooperative. The cooperative is located in Ngariama, Gichugu Division, Kirinyaga East District on the southern slopes of Mount Kenya.
